ConStellation 2003 Report 10/13/03 |
This past weekend, a few members of the staff went to ConStellation in Huntsville, AL. Overall, it was a decent con. There was a little bit less than expected. Following is a breakdown of a few different areas of the con.
Attendance - 7.3 Not many people attended this year's con - under 200 - but that's about what is expected from a smaller con like this one.
Anime Room - 2.1 What a disappointment! First off, the anime room didn't get started on schedule. Most of the anime showed was tired and old. They crammed shitty anime music videos down our throats and the host tried to educate all us retarted fans about each show...while we were watching it. If the same people are running the anime room next year, I won't waste my time there.
Role Playing (D&D) - 6.5 There were no RPGA games. To some, this may be a blessing, but I was looking forward to playing a few. However, we did get to play in some pretty decent games. They had Fairy Meat, Mystara, Dragon Lance and a few others.
LARP - 8.9 The LARP was fun again this year. The only complaint is that more people should have played.
ConSuite - 10.0 The best consuite around anywhere, bar none. Full meals, hot food and sugary sweets make this consuite the best place to satisfy any craving. Dishes ranged from baked spaghetti, meatball sandwiches, meat trays and vegetable soup to oreos, blueberry cake, fruits, doritos and cheese and crackers. Simply outstanding.
Video Game Room - 8.3 The biggest surprise of this year was the video game room. For $5, you got to play as much as you wanted and enter one tournament. They had Soul Caliber 2, Halo, DDR and some Mario Melee Super Smash bullshit.
Dance - 3.2 Pat McAdams knows how to LARP, but when it comes to DJing a party, he's pretty awful. Honestly...Hanson?!?
Guests - 7.9 Mercedes Lackey is a fairly big name in the world of fantasy geekdom, but she's not the friendliest person in the world. Plus, what's up with waiting in line for 45 minutes to get her autograph?
Rocky Horror - 7.7 Rocky Horror is always funny, but it would've been better with a few more people...not as many as were at DragonCon though. If I ever go to Rocky and there are over a few hundred people, I'm just going to leave with no questions asked.
Overall Score - 6.9 Not a bad score at all. If not for the anime room and the music selection at the "dance", then I'm sure the con would've gotten an 8 or better.
