Dawn of the Dead 03/22/04 |
Welcome to Zombie Week at ekajsmash! Today we'll be looking at the new Universal film, Dawn of the Dead. Of course it's not really new. The original Dawn of the Dead came out in 1978. So, following Hollywood's new tradition, this film is a remake.
Well, the movie starts out with a bang - literally. There is the obligatory sex scene right in the first few minutes of the film. Then, things get rocking when the couple's daughter walks in on them and bites her dad's neck. She's pushed down the hallway and then springs to her feet and runs back toward them...::gasp::. Springs to her feet? Runs back toward them? This doesn't sound like any zombie we know. When did the zombie template get +4 Dex? The rest of the movie continues with more marathon sprinting zombies. I feel like I should pay a nickel for every mile they run or something. Anyway, although the story is basically the same as the 1978 version, they still found a way to screw things up. They didn't spend enough time showing the different aspects of the mall setting that made the original great. Instead, they explored character relationships. Why was it that everyone was an asshole? I was pulling for the zombies! Well, honestly this film doesn't deserve much more of a review than that.
Overall, for today's horror genre movies, it was not bad. But as far as horror movies in general goes, I'd rather watch the original. Out of all of the "of the Dead" movies, that one was by far my favorite. Zombies in a shopping mall. That's still one hell of a concept!
George Romero's next "of the Dead" movie is called Dead Reckoning. Romero is still trying to get this one off the ground. But don't worry, he's got another zombie flick in the works.
