02/28/05

Have you ever went up to someone and said "hi" only to get a null response or the look of "go straight to Hell"? Sometimes, talking to people can be like talking to a brick wall. It's because they don't understand the delicate and intricate art form of small talking. This article is for those people. If you're one of them, read on. If you know one of them, then print this out and give it to them or at least send them the hyperlink.

The reasons behind not small talking is quite varied. It could be that the people are stuck up. It could be that they don't like other people in general. Or it could simply be that they have nothing to say. Fear not, here is a general guideline on how to go about small talking. There are five major points which will get you through any conversation.

1) A Greeting: "How are you?"
Simple and to the point, a proven ice breaker.

2) The Weather: "How about that weather?"
The weather always exists in some form or another, therefore you can always talk about it.

3) The Weekend: Use the appropriate phrase for the day of the week:
M-T: "How was your weekend?"
W-F: "What are you doing this weekend?"
Act like you give a shit. Nod your head, smile and insert "mmm hmm" and "yeah, that sounds good."

4) Sports: "How about them (insert local sports team)?"
It helps if you actually know something about the local sports team, but if you don't that's OK too.

5) Entertainment: "Seen any good movies lately?"
People like to be entertained, so there's a good chance that they've been to a movie within the past year.

So use these simple key phrases and you'll be sure to dazzle everyone at your next major social gathering with your witty and insightful dialogue.
